Jamal Callender

Jamal Callender, a Barbadian-American artist, is a versatile director, entrepreneur, dancer, choreographer, model, and educator. He began his dance training at Ballet Tech and the Brooklyn College Preparatory Center for the Performing Arts in New York City. After graduating from the Professional Performing Arts School/The Ailey School, Jamal earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from The Juilliard School in 2009 under the guidance of Lawrence Rhodes.


Jamal's performance career includes work with several prominent dance companies: The Atlanta Ballet (2009-2010), Peridance Ensemble (2010), Loni Landon Project (2011), Formal Structure Inc. (2011), Hubbard Street Dance Chicago (2010-2011), Ballet Hispanico as a principal dancer (2011-2015), Opus Dance Theatre (2014), Kevin O'Day Ballett at National Theater Mannheim as a soloist (2015-2016), NTM TANZ with Stephan Thoss as a soloist (2016-2020), and Ballet Bern as a guest soloist (2020-2021). He is currently a guest with Riva & Repele.


In 2012, Jamal received the prestigious Princess Grace Award. He founded the Barbados Dance Project (BDP) in 2014 to promote the significance of dance through education, collaboration, and engagement within the Barbadian community, offering tuition-free services. Jamal was honored by Barbados Today in 2017 as one of the “51 Inspiring Young Bajans” in celebration of the country's 51st year of independence, alongside Rihanna.

Jamal is a sought-after educator, having taught classes and workshops internationally for organizations such as Ballet Hispanico, Ailey II, New Orleans Ballet Association (N.O.B.A), the National Cultural Foundation (Barbados), Western Arkansas Ballet, Institute of the Arts Barcelona (Spain), MOVE|NYC|, PAR en Dansa (Barcelona), and IT Dansa (Barcelona).


As a choreographer, he won the 2021 Future of Dance Festival, curated by the historic 92nd Street Y in NYC. His winning work was later showcased at Martha Graham’s Joyce Theater season in NYC. Jamal's choreography has been performed in Barbados, the USA, Germany, and Spain. In 2021, he created GLORIA for PAR en Dansa, which was performed with a live orchestra and chorus and toured Catalonia.


A lifelong advocate for the arts, Jamal has served on the Dance/NYC Junior Committee and the artistic advisory board of MOVE|NYC|. He is represented by Fifth Artists in Barcelona and has been featured in the BMW M8 2022 commercial, Sea Mirror, and recently as a guest dance artist in the DIOR SS23 runway show in Paris.
