Kevin Joseph
Kevin Joseph, a native of Brooklyn, NY with Trinidadian and Tobagonian roots, began his dance journey at age 10 on the streets of East New York, Brooklyn, during Hip Hop’s formative years. He pursued formal training at Borough of Manhattan Community College under Dyane Harvey and continued at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center and Dance New Amsterdam.
Kevin's performance highlights include The Essence Awards, VH1 Divas Live, PBS's "Black Dance in The 20th Century," The Commemoration of the MAAFA at St. Paul Community Baptist Church, and The Oedipus Plays at the Herode Atticus amphitheatre in Greece with Avery Brooks and Earl Hyman. His choreography, influenced by Modern, Ballet, Jazz, Hip-Hop, and African dance, reflects his breakdancing roots from Brooklyn. His work has been featured at The American Black Film Festival, The Best of Seven @ 651 Arts, Lincoln Center Outdoors, Celebrate Brooklyn, the American Heritage Dance Convention, and Jacob's Pillow.
Kevin has collaborated with notable figures including Kevin "Lega" Jeff, Abdel Salaam, Michael Khan, Obediah Wright, Marlies Yearby, George Faison, Otis Salid, Avery Brooks, Lauryn Hill, and Anthony Hamilton. As a co-founder of Creative Outlet Dance Theatre of Brooklyn, he held roles as managing director, principal dancer, modern dance instructor, and education director, and was instrumental in developing Creative Outlet's Arts-in-Education program. He received the Black Men of Distinction Award from Marty Markowitz.
In collaboration with childhood friend Lakai Worrell, Kevin co-founded Purelements An Evolution in Dance, where he serves as co-executive artistic director. The organization encompasses a professional dance company, a performing arts school, and an educational outreach program.
